Just wanted to share! Great description of whoopie pies... especially for us Californians who haven't had much exposure (yet) to whoopie pies!

Whoopie!

The all-American sweet is this season’s must-have treat

The people of Pennsylvania and Maine can debate all they want about the origin of the whoopie pie (was it dreamed up by Amish moms or a frugal New Englander with a bit of extra chocolate cake batter?). Here in New York, we really only care about the important things: taste, convenience and style. Similar to the cupcake in ingredients but even easier to eat, the whoopie pie is essentially a layer cake sandwich, with frosting in the middle only. Traditionally as big as a small hamburger, today’s whoopies range from thick to thin, shareable to bite-size. And they’re giving the c-cake a run for its money, showing up at weddings and parties all over town. Here are some of the most delicious, holiday-flavored whoopies in the cases of local bakeries.
RED VELVET!
Want festive? Try the pumpkin and red velvet whoopie pies from Rainbo’s and Cakes and More.
Red Velvet Whoopie Pie
$2.50 at Rainbo’s and Cakes and More, Essex Street Market, 120 Essex St.; 212-982-8585
When baker Ron Budinas first started making whoopie pies about 12 years ago, interest was limited, but he knew the timeless all-American snack would make a comeback: “This isn’t a fad like macarons. American people like big pieces of cake with creamy stuff in the middle.” Throughout December, you can special order festive green-hued cream cheese-based filling inside your red velvet, and there will be peppermint stick whoopies with mint cake exteriors, too. They’re massive so prepare to share.
Chocolate Peppermint Whoopie Pie
$4.95 for three at Blue Smoke Bake Shop, 116 E. 27th St.; 212-447-6058
At Blue Smoke Bake Shop, inside the Murray Hill barbecue restaurant of the same name, pastry chef Jenn Giblin folds melted marshmallow into buttercream to stuff her trim, cocoa-rich whoopies. These are the most delicate whoopies in town, less hamburger than its peers in girth and weight, which means you might eat more than one. “Whoopie pies are good, solid comfort food — real Americana,” says Giblin, who vacations in whoopie-mad Maine every year. This holiday season, she’s adding her own twist with a chocolate peppermint whoopie pie — devil’s food cake filled with chocolate peppermint buttercream.
Chocolate Eggnog Whoopie Pie
$3 at Robicelli’s at Dekalb Market, 138 Willoughby St., Brooklyn; 917-509-6048
Robicelli’s began making whoopie pies three years ago. What’s changed since then, says Allison Robicelli, co-chef and owner, is how often she has to answer the “What’s a whoopie pie?” question. Now, everyone knows. Robicelli’s whoopie pies are traditionally sized, with a flat shell (more flying saucer than slider), and crafted with adult palates in mind. Think eggnog buttercream sandwiched between two layers of dark Valrhona chocolate. Holiday flavors rotate (Nutella praline, chocolate candy cane, etc.), so call ahead to see what’s in store. These whoopies are also sold at the Union Square Holiday Market, Booth C34 (in the first row by 14th Street), through 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Ginger Whoopie Pie With Lemon Cream Cheese
$2.50 at Baked Brooklyn, 359 Van Brunt St., Brooklyn; 718-222-0345
Whoopie pie mania is “slower than the cupcake thing, but building,” says Baked co-owner Matt Lewis, who trades traditional fillings for cream cheese or Swiss meringues. But building it is — in part, says Lewis, because they are easy to make and eat at parties. You’ll find an array of flavors — including ginger-molasses cake with lemon cream cheese, which has a light quality that won’t leave you feeling like you’ve over-indulged. You can try to make these at home, too. Baked now sells boxed mixes that are available in the Red Hook shop ($16) and at Williams-Sonoma ($16.95).
Pumpkin Whoopie Pie With Cranberries, Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese and Dark Chocolate Dip
$11.95 for six, $21.95 per dozen at e.e. cookies; eecookies.com, 646-145-7408
After years of baking cookies for holidays, bake sales and PTA meetings, former legal billing coordinator Kori Stanton opened her Web-based small-batch cookie company in 2009, with hand-delivery below 125th Street in Manhattan (shipping to the outer boroughs and beyond). So it comes as little surprise that Stanton’s pumpkin whoopie pie was born as a cookie and evolved from there. The dark chocolate dip is the final stage, says Stanton. “It is the perfect balance of sweet, sour and chocolate.”
Gingerbread Whoopie Pie
$1.75 at Tribeca Treats, 94 Reade St.; 212-571-0500
Tribeca Treats owner Rachel Thebault has been selling whoopie pies for a little more than a year. This month, pumpkin has been replaced by gingerbread filled with a Fluff-based icing. “It’s just a fun, modern twist on a conventional holiday dessert,” says Thebault. “We have so many cookie and cupcake options during the holiday season, but people always immediately gravitate to the whoopie pies.”

Don’t forget the milk!

Computer failure...

My computer died last week. And I just now got it back. Not to say I missed it much... I DEFINITELY had lots of household maintenance to catch up on! But now, I have to catch up on all my blogging and blog reading... all things interwebby fabulous! So, while I get back into the groove of having a computer back in my life, and while I still have to finish up the rest of my cleaning "extravaganza" - please be patient and I will be back! :)

another year...

I'm another year older... and of course celebrated with my closest friends!

They all know me so well, and the gifts always show!

And I think that its also a way to make me bake them even more sweet treats...

A new recipe book for whoopie pies (so many great recipes!) and a blank book to write my own recipes in!
Awesome bundt pan inspired by the classic german hugelhopf mold!
and of course, a whoopie pie pan!

happy baking to me!

As if I needed more...

I haven't explored this fully yet... but I am already in awe.

Compile your very own cook book? From front to back? Way cool!

Tons of recipes to browse? Awesome!

Not like I need more bookmarks of great recipe sites... I have issues enough as it is deciding what to bake next. But this was definitely a great find! Hope its useful to someone too!

BIG NEWS!

I BOUGHT ONE!

Spent the weekend hopping from store to store, checking out the "sales"... then I went online, and hmm'd and haww'd over the factory refurb models. And decided to go for it. With shipping and tax, it still came in under the in-store costs with discounts/sales. Needless to say, I'm uber excited and dreaming up all the wonderful things I can make! Happy early birthday to me! (This could also be looked at as the equivalent of an old man purchasing a ferrari during his midlife crisis... since I've been having my quarter-life crisis for oh, I don't know, a whole year now.)

More for the collection...

On my latest "therapy" shopping binge... I bought a couple of cookie recipe books...

Indulgence Cookies - A Fine Selection of Sweet Treats

Cookies

(both from the bargain bin baby!)

After flipping through these, I settled upon yet another recipe for jam thumbprints, from the Indulgence Cookies book. (Anyone tired of these yet?)
Nothing TOO much different than the previous recipes I've tried, except the use of powdered sugar as opposed to regular sugar, and also the addition of lemon zest which I skipped on since I didn't have any on hand.

The cookie itself was more like a sugar cookie - so I've been told - than the previous. A bit more crisp too. But not hard. This one is a winner for sure.
I also used the Superfruit Jam I bought on my last grocery trip to Trader Joe's... hmm not much a fan... but with the cookie it actually doesn't matter.

Delayed to no end

Weeks feel like forever, but they still fly by like nothing.

I haven't even posted about my farmer's market trip, and it's already going to be here again!!!!
Just to blitz through it all (and since I don't have much else to post baking-wise)... here it is:

Italian Butter Rum Mini Bundt by Dolce Monachelli's: dolcecakes.net

Pluots

The other version of pluots, but not aprium.

Curried Potato Foccaccia Pocket from Blackmarket Bakery

Berries! Blue, Straw, Rasp... thus completing my hobo bowl.

Delicious hummus! (First time I think I've really had hummus!)

Homemade Cannoli - with chocolate chips in the middle!

Since then, I've learned how to make my own puff pastry... and use said puff pastry to make peach and blackberry turnovers with almond paste, and then also made a Raspberry Tart with Creme Fraiche Wild Flower Honey Filling. (I forgot my camera.... LAME!!)

not as bad, but close enough

Due to annoying (non-serious) health issues, I took off early from work, thus racing through work and not eating a lunch. So, by the time I got home from the doc's I was STARVING.

5 Dumplings and 5 Dino Chicken Nuggets later... still hungry.

This is where it gets bad.

Cheese Cubes on a paper plate. (Not as bad as eating a whole rotisserie chicken outta the plastic container).

But then of course, since I was still hungry (a few hours later), I redeemed myself with whole wheat penne with tomato sauce and turkey meatballs.

Meanwhile, in the baking realm, I am looking for vanilla cookie recipes to test out the 4 "specialty" vanilla extracts I have sitting in the cupboard. So more cookie experimentation to come soon!

avocaDON'T

So I ate an early dinner and didn't want to eat any more tonight...
but I touched an avocado and it was ready!
I didn't have anything to make some guac, so I decided to just eat it as is over a fried egg with tortilla chips.

Yeah. No. Not all that satisfying, and actually kind of weird.

I fried the egg with some crumbled chips. Then sliced the avocado on top.

It was fun though slicing the avocado open, taking out the pit using the "knife chop" method, and (almost) cleanly scooping it out.

Caution: Hot!

Today I got up early (super early) and went to the farmer's market! Working on Saturdays for the past 2-ish years has made it nearly impossible to visit... sadly. While I don't always pick up any fresh produce, I still enjoy walking amongst vendors and farmers and seeing their goods.

This time around, even though I had to get to work, I made it a mission to go!
Why? Because... of Blackmarket Bakery.

Amazing Chocolate Almond Bread Pudding. MMMMMMMMM!
The warm melty goodness of the caramel in contrast to the light sweetness of rum, and almond, and of course chocolate. Then there is the crunch of a few slivered almonds.
SOOOO GOOD! (The minor burns from the hot ramekin are absolutely worth it.)
I never really bit onto bread pudding until Ila's sweet potato bread pudding from the holidays (which I am still waiting for a recipe on). And ever since... I have been hooked.
If I see it, I will get it. No lie. (Unless there are raisins, then I will mull it over.)

Also, I love to see the buckets of flowers. I'm not a flower person... but they make pretty gifts! (So sad when they wilt and die...)

Getting up early was so worth it today! Got to grab a latte with a bud, and stroll the market together and look at random food things. AND, it wasn't hot! We went before the clouds had cleared for the afternoon... AWESOME.

And to continue this "active/productive" streak... I finally got my "corkboard" up!
Note to self: have a boy hammer nails into walls next time.

Friday Fat Day

Thanks to my lame ankles I haven't gone jogging in about 2 weeks now.
And gradually I am eating like crap again.

Cookies have started to sneak into my tummy ever since I made them...
but by far, today is the worst since my whole health kick began.

Started like usual with a nonfat yogurt with sliced strawberries and almonds.
For lunch, I planned to just have a small bowl of leftover brown rice and grilled chicken and veggies from FlameBroiler.
BUT I was still hungry, and when half a bean and cheese burrito was offered to me, I took it and INHALED it.
Then I had an orange.
Couple hours later, a chocolate chip cookie.
I was given a torta since a co-worker forgot to take it with him when he left work and insisted I should try it. So that was dinner.

It (barely) survived the trip home in a non-descript brown baggie... a quick reheat in the microwave and ta-da. It was definitely a knife-and-forker for me. I can only assume it is better fresh. Not several hours old and soggy. So I must say... I was not all that impressed.

And then to top off the insanely unhealthy day, I had... *gasp* a SODA. Oh coke zero... I missed you. I see you and your buddies tucked away in the back of the fridge everyday...

So with that... I fully intend to watch more carefully what I shovel into my mouth. and for gods sake to show some friggin restraint when it comes to cookies!

It's MARGARITA TIME

aka summer time (well... close enough).

Friends and I celebrated an early cinco de mayo with tacos, burritos, chips, nachos, and lots of margarita and mojitos poolside. Kate made most of the awesome food. Yummy meat... Tres Leches Cake! It was a beautiful day!

I contributed a whole #10 can of nacho cheese.

AND sweet corn cakes!

Yes its a mix... but an AMAZING mix. Not exactly the same as the restaurant, but definitely a close second. Slightly more grainy... but otherwise, MMMmmmMMM good!
The color is a wonderful sunshine yellow... the photos just can't capture that.

Add in some butter, creamed corn, and water... and voila!

In other news, my boss/friend appreciated me this past week with an awesome MAC Hello Kitty doll! It's so great to work with people you like and who like you too!

Small steps...

Trying to diet the right way... with healthy foods and exercise.

Hence the never before seen plethora of fruits and veggies and all things non-fat in my fridge.
(To be honest, I haven't latched onto veggies too much. Fruits are waaaaay yummier.)

Spinach, Tomato, and Ham Egg Scramble

And as a special treat, a new foodie discovery, Jello Salad (Lime Jello w/ Pineapple Chunks and Cottage Cheese), courtesy of Kate's mom.

It SOUNDS super weird, but it is AMAZING. The creamy chunks of cottage cheese with the sweet pineapple and lime jello... DELISH!

Cupcake Project v1.0

Celebrating my own birthday is never a big to-do... but when it comes to other people's birthdays, mainly for close friends... I go all out (as much as I can) for them. And it also gives me an excuse to express my creativity. Thus, Cupcake Project v1.0:

Multicolored Cupcakes (White Cake + Neon Dye)

Double Chocolate Cupcakes (Devil's Food Cake + Mini Chocolate Chips)

(oopsies... I dropped the pan in the oven while checking, and sunk these poor mini cuppie cakes. And why are the cupcakes coming out all "dimple faced"?? Could be my messy pouring method.)

Cupcakes frosted with Basic Buttercream

And to finish off these yummy treats, I "created" a baroque-y classical style inspired cake/treat stand:
